The problem is, Republicans have basically reversed their positions entirely. They used to be fiscally conservative, small government and low taxes, and on the social side, they were essentially hands-off. Now, they're socially conservative, they want to control what everyone does in their bedroom, what people read, what people watch, how people think and they're essentially hands-off on the fiscal side at best, insane liberal spending machines at worst. But so long as they keep *CALLING* themselves conservatives, even if they aren't, they can con a significant portion of the voting conservative public into supporting them because these people are voting for a name, not a position. Very few people who I would consider classical conservatives would agree with anything that the RNC is doing today, but a lot of them keep voting for them because they can't tell the difference between the conservatism that was and the neo-conservatism that usurped the name today.
