Comparing McCain and Obama
If you have been following my posts for the last couple days, you have seen my discussions on what I look for in a President, what I think of the Republican nominee, John McCain, and what I think of the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama. I think, especially after what I’ve written about Obama, it should be fairly obvious why I’ve picked McCain.
He’s the lesser of two evils.
McCain is an almost-responsible tax cutter and would clamp down on government spending who would probably make a token gesture to lower taxes some time during his Presidency. Obama would raise the burden taxes on, quite literally, every segment of society and vastly expand government spending. Sure the poor would get a break, but they’ll need it when the cost of living increases from corporations passing the buck and skyrocketing energy prices. McCain wins hands down when it comes to fiscal responsibility.
On the economy, McCain admits he doesn’t have a clue. He defers his judgment to Republican cronies who may or may not know what the hell they’re doing and who may or may not be honest people. Obama, on the other hand, is ignorant to the degree of his ignorance. He wouldn’t be a 50/50 shot on the economy, he would, beyond a shadow of a doubt, set us on the wrong course. I’m no gambler, but I’d much rather have an off chance of success instead of a guaranteed failure.
When it comes to civil liberties, both have it wrong. The only two issues they disagree with each other on are over flags (McCain thinks it should be unconstitutional to burn them, while Obama thinks there is something wrong with the Confederate flag being flown next to the other 5 flags over Texas) and habeus corpus. Obama wins this round, barely, and only by grace of a single issue.
With McCain winning on the major issues, the other issues don’t help Obama garner any points. His views on war and foreign policy are naïve, reckless, and – let’s face it – ignorant. He would expand government spending on all levels, and would resist efforts to cut waste. His faith-based polices don’t differ substantively with McCain’s policies. His energy policy is outright retarded. His “baby killing” stance isn’t any less repugnant than McCain’s desire to outlaw abortion entirely.
I can’t help but feel like I’ve been offered a choice between dumb and dumber. They’re bad and worse. I’m giving my vote to McCain.
He’s the least objectionable alternative.
