Iraq and Afghanistan both are tricky when it comes to making the play. I think in both arenas we're screwing ourselves, but in the current political climate we can't really change that.

Honestly, I don't think modern society has the willpower to engage in true wars of conquest any more. Pacification is a messy, brutal, bloody business and we just don't have the stones for it. Couple that with our desperate insistence on democracy in nations that just aren't culturally or politically ready for it and we're really handicapped for a viable long term solution. We basically have to convince a country we just invaded that they love us and our ways are better than their ways.

Good luck with that.

You can draw some major parallels between our current battles over seas and our own revolutionary war. Americans were just militia folk who were fighting against the most powerful military on earth. We lost all but a hand full of battles in our struggle for independence. In the end the fight was not decided by the side that held the most advantages, but by the side that suffered the fewest disadvantages.

You can't sit down to play poker and then refuse to hold spades in your hand. Playing with just 3 suits is going to absolutely cripple you against someone playing with all 4. There is no strategy if you can't get the cards you need.

Would you have raised, called or folded on Afghanistan? In this case I think everyone at the table has seen our cards and knows they are not great. And speaking of showing our cards, who in their right mind telegraphs how many troops we are sending? America is not willing to go all in on this and for good reason, the pot is not big enough.

Maybe Obama's not bluffing the world, maybe his is bluffing us to make us think he is interested in this game.
